Basement Insulation
Basement insulation with extruded polystyrene (XPS) is said to be one of the most effective methods of residential basement construction. The XPS insulations give it a real closed cell insulation leaving no holes or voids in the walls of the basement. It seals the walls and floors such that there is no water penetration from the walls. In fact this type of water proofing is so effective that it is also used to make billets for floating dockyards. The insulation is highly compressive and will not sag over a period of time.
A large number of people benefit themselves from this type of basement insulation. Leakage is very common with basement walls and floors so this type of insulation is typically helpful where there is leakage. Earlier the insulation was not very much effective and use to die off very quickly. A number of people still use the earlier methods of insulation. The most prime reason may be certain contractors who simply resist change even over a period of years.
Earlier type basement sub floors of the same dimension are still being built using the technique of basement insulation using lumbers installed with nails and screws. A polythene vapor barrier is kept below the wooden floor and then the floor is fixed using many wooden nuts and screws. This method was traditionally used for basement insulation. This type of methods was basically used to wrapping the floors tightly to the floor.
This system works provided the floor should have a clunky and flawed design. It should be at least two inches high reducing the headroom. The space may usually be challenged for height. The evolution of the basement sub floor system was to apply rigid basement insulation. The plywood was not bolted to the ground so that the insulation of the floor could be maintained using the adhesive. The plywood would be insulated from the top with adhesives.
The sub floor system is usually easy for both contractors and DIYers alike. This system does not have to be fastened to the floor as it does not utilize a lumber. This literally saves a lot of time and money. The material cost is also reduced to a much greater extent. It also eliminates molds from the wood in the floor. So this is one of the most effective methods for basement insulation. As there are air tight gaskets present so continuous vapor barrier is maintained protecting the finished basement.
This does not have an impact on the headroom either. This method can also be used for the foundation walls. This type of insulation absorbs and holds the water thus increasing the life of the walls and basement floor. This may also prevent moulds from growing thus increasing the life of the floor or the wall that has been insulated. Also one may use a number of materials for insulation. A few of them may be foam insulation, insulated panels and the straw panels or the fibrous insulation. Apart from this mineral wool and fiber glass may also be used.
